Tegalalang Rice Terrace In Bali – Visitor’s Guide

//

Tegalalang Rice Terrace is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site located in Ubud, and it so happens to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali.

These spectacular rice fields are one of the most beautiful man-made wonders you’ll ever see and I highly recommend adding them to your list of places to see during your visit to the Island Of Gods.

I have put together this complete guide to visiting Tegallalang Rice Terrace including how to get there, how much it costs, and what to expect when you arrive.

WHERE IS TEGALALANG RICE TERRACE?

Tegalalang Rice Terraces can be found in the popular rainforest region of Ubud, central Bali.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces is approximately a 20-minute drive north of Ubud.

HOW TO GET TO TEGALALANG RICE TERRACE?

The best and easiest way to get to Tegalalang Ubud is by scooter.

If you are staying in the Ubud region, I recommend renting a scooter and making the short 20-minute drive over to the rice fields.

Don’t feel confident riding a scooter? Another great option for getting around Bali is to hire a private car and a driver for the day and experience all that the island has to offer.

Includes:

  • Experienced Driver
  • Hotel pick-up & drop-off
  • Mineral water
  • Petrol

ARRIVING AT TEGALLALANG RICE TERRACE

When you arrive, there are multiple entry points to get down into the rice paddies.

Find a safe place to park your scooter on the side of the road or in one of the parking lots and from here you’ll see a concrete staircase leading down into the terraces.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit these stunning Ubud rice fields is at sparrows fart. For those of you who don’t know the expression ‘sparrows fart,’ it means at sunrise, haha!

Not only will you avoid the crazy crowds by arriving early but you will also get to witness the magical sun rays beaming through the coconut palms, lighting up the phenomenal Tegallalang Rice Terrace.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TEGALLALANG RICE TERRACE

There are a few areas to explore at Tegalalang and my absolute favorite spot is located in the furthest valley.

I would recommend spending anywhere between thirty minutes to two hours exploring all four corners of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site.

From the jump-off point, you’ll have to first walk all the way down the stairs to the bottom of the valley, then follow the stairs up the other side of the rice paddies and around the corner to find the ‘Instagram’ spot within the Tegalalang rice fields.

The way is clearly signposted so it’s quite easy to navigate your way around by following the signs and the concrete pavers.

When you reach the furthest valley, you’ll start to see the magnificent sun rays beaming through the canopy above.

A local Indonesian man resides in a small hut that overlooks the terraces and he is usually inside playing therapeutic tunes on his wooden xylophone.

He will most likely approach you and ask for a donation for passing through his rice fields. My friends and I gave him 20,000 IDR each so something around this will be acceptable.

I guess you could say this was the unofficial entrance fee for Tegalalang Rice Terrace.

Tegalalang is a popular spot for Instagrammers, so no doubt you’ll be sure to see a well-known photographer or even a famous model strolling around these Ubud rice fields.

The terraces are impressively cut out into walls of the valley with up to 10 tiered levels of rice paddies and cascading waterfalls throughout.

As you continue to explore you’ll get to see the local farmers going about their daily routine harvesting the rice and maintaining the valley, making it more enjoyable and picturesque for visitors.

A number of tree swings are strung around the treetops throughout these Ubud rice fields which can be quite a thrilling experience.

The price to use the swing is 250,000 IDR which I think is quite expensive for what it is, though it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some.

Food and drinks are readily available at dozens of warungs that are dotted around the hillside. Not a bad spot for a meal with a view if you ask me!

Most businesses will open their doors from 7 am onwards.
